About me
Well met, good traveller!
My name is Luke.
Come in, out of the cold!
I’ve a fire burning, and as luck would have it, I’ve just tapped a keg. So, here you go…
Now, I brewed that myself.
Tell me what you think.
It’s a cosy image: sitting by the fireside, in silence or talking deep into the night with an old friend, relative or loved one.
For me, it conjures images of Bilbo and Gandalf, of Mr Beaver with four future Kings and Queens of a mythical land. It also conjures images of my dad and of the first time I came home from university.
I had never lived away from home. It had only been ten weeks, but it felt like years.
I came through the front door, gave my mum a hug and followed her to the kitchen. My dad appeared at the door to his print shop at the back of the house.
“Come and look at this.”
He disappeared, and I followed. I found him at the back of the shop, behind his machines, standing by a plastic drum that was perched on a heat mat. He was pouring me a glass of something.
“So… What is university like?”
And that’s how it began for me, brewing: just standing at the back of my father’s workshop, the two of us leaning against his print machines, working our way through his first-ever batch of home brew. That was the moment I realised I wasn’t a child anymore; I was becoming a man.
Well met, good traveller!
